RCMP investigate suspicious occurrence involving youth

A quick decision by a downtown youth and a reminder that “no” is a complete sentence are at the heart of a police advisory following a troubling encounter in the city centre.

The Kamloops RCMP also urged families to review personal safety plans with their children after a youth reported being approached by a man in a pickup truck on Feb. 15.

Police say the incident occurred at about 2:20 p.m., in the 700-block of Victoria Street. The youth had been walking alone when a man driving a black Dodge pickup allegedly pulled up and offered a ride.

The youth declined, went into a nearby business and contacted a trusted adult, actions police say are exactly what they hope young people will do in similar situations.

“No licence plate was observed, but the truck did have a scratch on the back like it had been keyed,” said Cpl. Dana Napier, spokesperson for the detachment.

The driver was described as Indigenous, with black hair and a grey beard. Investigators believe the vehicle later travelled to a parking lot in the 450-block of Lansdowne Street.

Officers are now canvassing for surveillance and dash-cam footage that might help identify the truck or its driver, said Napier.

Police are reminding parents and guardians to have straightforward conversations with children and teens about staying aware of their surroundings, avoiding engagement with strangers and planning ahead for how to respond if approached. Knowing where to go for help, whether that’s a nearby business or a phone call to a safe adult, can make all the difference.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 and reference file 2026-4784.
