Aug. 2025 good news round-up

Still more to celebrate in Kamloops this month!

Ronald McDonald Family Room now open at Royal Inland Hospital: Huge thanks to everyone who donated funds and supported this incredible new addition to our hospital. From the RIH Foundation: The Family Room offers a 1,100-square-foot refuge for families, complete with a comfortable living room for rest and connection, a fully equipped kitchen and dining space, in-house washer and dryer, a shower facility with toiletries, a play area for young patients and siblings, a quiet space for reflection or private conversation. The space will be open daily from 9 am to 9 pm to families of patients ranging from 0-18.

Kamloops Adult Learners Launching New Website: “The Kamloops Adult Learners Society is anticipating a mid-August launch date for their new, improved website.  This fall, we will offer about 50 courses, on everything from the Beatles to Ovid, from a study of landmark plays produced by Western Canada Theatre to Artificial Intelligence. Zoom classes and local tours are also on our roster. We are grateful to the City of Kamloops for the grant to make this new website a reality.”

Share and Learn about Wildfires: Kamloops Museum partnering with Thompson Rivers University, the City of Kamloops, the Kamloops Art Gallery, United Way, and the FireSmart Program: Hot Topic: Cultural Mapping of the FireSmart Program invites guests to draw the answers. This interactive exhibition puts community knowledge front and centre. Your maps become more than ink on paper. They’ll fuel research into how our community thinks about fire, what we know and what we need to know. Help shape the conversations that keep our homes safe.

Huge congratulations to all the candidates in the 2025 Kamloops Ambassador Program! It is impressive to see young Kamloopsians stepping up to learn more about our wonderful community and to improve their own skills. Congratulations to Nicole Ugoeke, Quinn Nair, Lizze Harbaruk, Peyton Woods, and Shea Sparks for their candidacies in the 2025 Kamloops Ambassador Program. They all devoted 80 hours of personal development, volunteerism, and community service for the past six months. And further congratulations to Lizzie, Peyton, and Shea for their appointment as 2025/26 Kamloops Ambassadors.

Amazing 37 years on local Community Future board: This year, Community Futures Thompson Country recognizes the retirement of Ken White, who has served as a dedicated volunteer with Community Futures Thompson Country since 1987, shortly after its inception in 1985. With a professional background as a commercial banker, Ken brought invaluable insight and expertise to the organization, particularly in developing lending practices that have ensured financial sustainability and responsible growth for local entrepreneurs. For 37 years, Ken has held numerous leadership roles, including serving as Board Chair.
